"Because we focused on the snake, we missed the scorpion."
The Egyptian proverb immediately caught my eye. Sometimes we don't see the bigger picture. We get so focused on one detail that we become blind to other dangerous obstacles in our way.
I'll call it the Scorpion factor. It's really a matter of perspective. The easiest way to prevent it from happening is to take a deep breath, step back and look at things from a different angle. That's also a great way to find something that you've lost, but that's a story for another day.
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Jeremiah 29:11. I repeat it in my head often.
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
The verse reminds me that the Lord's eyes are always on me, and he is observant of what's going on in my life. Although, I don't don't know the precise details of all he has planned for me; I know that he has a plan. The plan is good, and it includes prospering me, giving me hope, and a future. (It's up to me to go along with His plan)
It's a big world out there. Keep calm, step back, and see the bigger picture. Watch out for snakes, but don't forget about scorpions. And while you're at it remember to pray for 2020 vision so you'll see the rats.
Be careful out there.
