Egg Prices

Wow! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Maybe you’ve noticed it already but I had no idea that eggs cost more than chicken. Yesterday while on a “groceries date” with the Missus (sometimes that’s the only way we get to hang out together), I happened to notice the price of eggs and it was a shock. I felt like Poppy Bush seeing a barcode scanner for the first time. I knew groceries were high but almost $5.00 for one dozen eggs?

I felt like my wallet was getting plucked like a chicken for dinner. With that in mind, I decided to investigate why eggs are costing so much. Here’s what I found.

Egg prices are rising as the US Department of Agriculture tries to contain a bird flu outbreak by killing infected flocks. So far, 40.3 million chickens—the vast majority of which are birds used for egg production—and 7.7 million other types of birds have been destroyed in the effort.

The worst of the infection appears to be over. There hasn’t been a newly reported case of bird flu since June 17 according to the USDA data.

Egg prices climbed even higher in California due to Proposition 2 which was approved by voters in 2008 going into full effect January 2015. Proposition 2 created a new state statute that prohibits the confinement of farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs.
