The 80/20 Rule

I’m looking for healthy food with a side of fries. Did I hear you say, that’s impossible? Take a second and hear me out.

Recently, I started thinking about the so-called 80/20 rule. I first heard about the 80/20 rule while watching “Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?”

The rule says that in a relationship, you’ll never get 100% of what you want and that at most you’ll get 80%. But, the devil is in the details; so some other person will always come along and have that missing 20% you don’t have. Some folks fall for the 20% just to realize that they’ve made a tremendous mistake, and should’ve stayed for their original 80%.

Here’s the scene in the movie

Healthy Diet and the 80/20 Rule

What does that have to do with French fries you ask? Likewise, I think you can adapt the rule to healthy eating. After a little research, I found I’m not the only one who thinks this is true.

You’ve probably heard of people who follow the 80/20 rule. Many celebs swear by it: Jillian Michaels has said she follows an 80/20 eating plan, as does Miranda Kerr and Jessica Alba. Australian chef Teresa Cutter even wrote a book about it. Source: Health.com

In short, the 80/20 diet calls for you to eat Ideal Meals 80 percent of the time. Ideal meals are low-salt, low-fat, low-sugar and generally vegetarian. Then, it lets you indulge 20 percent of the time. The plan is for you start paying closer attention to your diet. After that, it won’t be so tough for you to cut the 20 percent junk food, meat, sweets or whatever food you’re splurging on, even more.

Healthy with a side of fries

At this point, you can see that eating a side of fries with your baked salmon isn’t so terrible after all. The key is moderation. Like most things in life, too much of a “good thing” is always bad for you. There are exceptions to that rule, but not many. Lastly, I’d like to add that some foods are unhealthy to eat in any amount; a good example would be French fries, fried in lard, yuck. Foods that you shouldn’t eat is a subject beyond the scope of this post, but if you’re looking for some recipes for healthy side dishes click here
