Yesterday I read a shocking article on the internet, Asian Seafood Raised on Pig Feces Approved for U.S. Consumers, The article left me with the question. Is tilapia good for you and your family? I know that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, so I started to investigate. The article was written in October 2012, by a reporter for Bloomberg Business, a very reputable source. I began to take a closer look, and I found some troubling information. The news is even worse for shrimp.

What Is Tilapia

A real chicken-of-the-sea, Tilapia is a white, mild-tasting fish that’s cheap to breed, grows fast and is easy to sell. Some scholars believe the fish in the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish were Tilapia.

Is Tilapia Good For You?

I found an excellent article “Do Not Eat Tilapia” that partially answers the question. Is Tilapia good for you? The article was written by the folks over at snopes.com. The people at Snopes make a living destroying urban myths, and fake internet stories. They are an excellent source for getting to the bottom of the stories you see on the internet. To read what they say about Tilapia, Click Here. Snopes says to watch out for seafood imported from China. If you thought dangerous antibiotic use only applied to chicken and cattle, think again. You should read this article put out by Mother Jones. It explains how chemicals and antibiotics are also being used on fish farms

What You Can Do

First, it is important to know where the fish comes from. For tilapia, the best choice is fish raised in the US, Canada, and Ecuador. However, the labeling is not always transparent, and some seafood products are exempt from having to label the food’s origin. Also, there is no way to know if farm-fed fish were raised on a GMO diet. There are no guidelines in place, yet that would classify seafood as organic.

The Good News

The news is not all bad. If you like Tilapia and are concerned about, is Tilapia good for you? Make sure to read The Truth About Tilapia. The article has some great tips on eating Tilapia.

That’s all for now, see you again soon. God be with you until we meet again.
