Why You Should Love the End of Daylight Savings Time

Clock Face, end of daylight savings time

Hoo Ray!!! Last weekend was the end of Daylight Savings Time.

Here’s the other good thing I said I would tell you about in my last post. Last Saturday we set our clocks back an hour, it was the end of Daylight Savings Time for this year. I love it when the clocks “fall back” to standard time. I stopped being a party animal many moons ago, and admittedly I now enjoy going to bed earlier. Not surprisingly, I can fall asleep in a snap if it’s actually dark outside; and as a bonus for the first few weeks after the fall time change it feels like I’m getting an extra hour of sleep. For me, it’s a win-win situation.

Did you know that people have more heart attacks the Monday after we lose an hour and go back to Daylight Savings Time?

“Lost sleep, disrupted circadian rhythm and a weakened immune system may seem like minor responses to the time change. Combine that with people suffering from heart conditions, and daylight savings, when spring forward, becomes a trigger for heart attacks.

According to a cardiovascular researcher at the University of Alabama, the Monday and Tuesday after the beginning of daylight savings is on average associated with a 10 percent increase in heart attack cases”

I like getting an extra hour of light in the morning. Instead of getting up at 7:00 A.M. I’m up at 6;00 A.M. and I get an extra hour of light in the morning, the way my maker intended for me to get it. Maybe I can use the extra hour to get back into my exercise routine.

If your feeling some afternoon grogginess for the first couple of weeks after the time change, you can combat this naturally with Light Therapy Boxes.

“Light therapy boxes, particularly those that emit blue light, can combat your brain’s tendency to pump out melatonin (the sleep hormone) when it starts getting dark earlier in the day,”

Michael Breus, PhD

Some good choices for Blue Light are Philips GoLITE BLU Energy Light, Rechargeable  or the NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy Lamp. These gadgets will boost your energy level and mood all year long. They are an excellent investment if you live in a place like Seattle, Washington for instance or anywhere that you will spend a lot of time indoors under artificial light.
