This week I discovered a Navajo proverb,
"You can't wake a person who is pretending to be asleep."

According to Merriam-Webster, woke means "aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)."

In contrast, being asleep summons up the monster hiding under my bed when I was a child. People cannot afford to be sleeping right now. We're at a critical point in America's history.  It's way too early to crawl into the bed and pull up the sheets. Crash out now, and you're definitely going to hear some stuff bumping in the night.

A nightmarish thing is happening in politics.

There's a group of people busy turning back the hands of time. Last week Georgia's G.O.P. passed a significant law to limit voting. President Biden had this to say "This makes Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle,"

Try, as we might, we cannot force someone to do something that they do not want to do. You'll never be able to awaken people pretending to be asleep. They're not really sleeping. Things in Georgia didn't go as planned in the last election, so they're changing the rules.

While writing this post, I spotted a video of Stevie Wonder. It was made shortly before our last election. It still applies. Be sure to check it out. It's highly relevant to what's happening now.

Americans are out of bed; let's stay up late and finally destroy the monster under the bed. The very foundation of our democracy, the right to vote, is on the line... again. It's precisely why Ida B. Wells, James Earl Chaney, Fannie Lou Hamer, and others fought so hard for the right to vote. Every American old enough to vote should have the right to vote. Nobody should put obstacles in Americans' path to prevent them from voting.

So, you're up to your old tricks again.

Like, my mother taught me, "Every closed eye is not sleeping.
